Testing InTeGrate Curriculum in Your Classroom

InTeGrate Teaching Materials

InTeGrate teaching materials are being collaboratively developed by teams of faculty from different institutions. This unique process facilitates the development of quality, adaptable materials addressing societal issues that can be integrated into many higher education classroom settings. After the materials have been developed and tested in the authors' classroom, there will be an additional round of testing by outside faculty interested in being involved in the process. If you would like to test materials in your classroom, please express your interest. A stipend of $500 will be provided once the materials have been tested and the assessments have been completed and returned to InTeGrate.

Assessment and Evaluation Data

All of the information below must be collected for the InTeGrate assessment and project evaluation. The assessment team will analyze the embedded assessment student work to assess to what extent the module or course was successful in meeting its objectives of student learning. The pre-knowledge measure and GLE student responses will be used to assess to what extent the module addresses the goals of the InTeGrate project and to what extent all the materials being developed are meeting the project goals.

The evaluation team will use the data collected to measure the project's overall effectiveness at:

  1. Expanding the number of students who enroll in geoscience courses.
  2. Achieving enhanced learning.
  3. Achieving significant progress towards addressing the national challenge of environmental sustainability.
These data will be incorporated into our research results in aggregate. Presentation of the material will be confined to project work groups, professional publications, and conferences. When individual quotes are used to illustrate important points, names will not be identified.

Institution Review Board

Carleton College has approved the InTeGrate project as EXEMPT (Acrobat (PDF) 106kB May22 12). This approval may be sufficient to provide the collected student data to the InTeGrate project. However, each materials tester needs to check with their institution as the institution may require a separate IRB application. Copies of the IRB application for Carleton College can be provided as an example.

Because Carleton College approved the application as EXEMPT, testers are not required to maintain a formal, signed consent form for each student. However, testers still need to inform their students about this research so that the students have the option to not have their student assessments included. Carleton College still prefers signed student consent forms (Microsoft Word 31kB Jan15 13) as the means to ensure that students are informed and have the opt-out option and the University of Akron allows for the implied consent form (Microsoft Word 52kB May22 12). The materials testers will need to select the option that aligns with their institution's interpretation of the EXEMPT status.

Data Collected

Materials testers are required to provide information that reflects on your own experience and data collected from the students. The Assessment and Evaluation page provides a more detailed overview of the instruments being used to measure the impact of the InTeGrate curriculum on student learning.
