The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), publisher of the Journal of Geoscience Education (JGE), invites applications for a three to five-year term as Editor.
The Journal of Geoscience Education is the premier peer-reviewed publication for geoscience education research at the undergraduate and pre-college levels. JGE is the publication of record for NAGT, and serves as the only international forum for the publication of research concerning the pedagogy, assessment, and philosophy of teaching and learning about the geosciences. JGE is published five times per year in January, March, May, September and November. Each issue typically consists of between 8 and 12 research papers as well as columns on educational research. JGE also frequently sponsors Special Issues on important emerging topics.
The formal appointment term is three to five years, starting in January 1, 2009 with volume 57. It is anticipated that the incoming editor will be able to begin the transition process and assume some duties by Fall of 2008. The Editor works closely with the Executive Committee of NAGT to promote and serve the mission of the Association and works to promote the actions, initiatives and activities of NAGT through JGE. The Journal is also a stand-alone entity within NAGT with a distinct operating budget and a substantial degree of autonomy, so it is critical that the Editor be conversant with the priorities of NAGT and the geoscience education research and teaching community that publishes regularly within the pages of JGE, and be able to act as a liaison between these communities.
The NAGT is a professional society committed to advancing geoscience education research, outreach and classroom curricula at all levels in academia and in the general public. As such, we seek an individual qualified to act as a strong advocate for both Association activities and priorities as well as the intellectual growth of the Journal and the research field of geoscience education. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be an active member of the geoscience education community, experienced in research in geoscience education and/or in the rigorous assessment of student learning gains in geoscience in common educational settings.
The successful candidate should anticipate managing the ongoing planned transition to online submission, review and production, and should be prepared to work with outside vendors selected by the Executive Committee for this purpose. Additionally, the Editor will be expected to manage the efforts of 20 Associate Editors, coordinating review and revision of manuscripts and timely completion of revisions. The Editor should also be knowledgeable of the production, printing, fulfillment, and distribution processes common to print and electronic journals, and be able to advise the Executive Committee on developments and opportunities that could be especially beneficial to JGE and the Association. The Editor should be available throughout the time of the Geological Society of America annual meeting, which serves as the Association's business meeting, as well as an annual Spring mid-year meeting, and other activities as required to further special initiatives on behalf of JGE and NAGT.
The search committee requests proposals from applicants outlining a vision for the future of the Journal, including a statement expressing how JGE can best serve both the broad membership of NAGT and the geoscience education and teaching community. The Association will negotiate a final plan regarding administrative support, travel support, telephone and Internet access, and other basic infrastructure in collaboration with the successful candidate for the ultimate establishment of the Editorship.
Duties for this position will begin in the Fall of 2008. Applications will be reviewed beginning February 1, continuing until the position is filled. We anticipate conducting interviews in early Spring of 2008. Applications should consist of a concise vision statement, proposed implementation plan, and current Curriculum Vita. These materials and any other inquiries should be submitted via e-mail to Dr. David Steer, Chair of the JGE Editor Search Committee at steer@uakron.edu. Please also include complete contact information for five (5) references.
