Field Geology for Teachers
published Dec 12, 2013 10:51amMichigan Technological University will be offering its field-based course "Geology of Utah's National Parks" from June 14 - July 1, 2010. This course is primarily designed to serve secondary-level science teachers, whether or not they have a background in the geosciences. The course consists of fourteen days of field-based activities conducted in and around the national parks and monuments of eastern Utah – areas internationally recognized for their outstanding geology. Using maps, compasses, GPS, rock and mineral identification, geomorphology, subsurface geology, fossils, and basic engineering principles, participants learn how climate, sea level, and mountain building change the earth's landscape through time, and how geologists recognize the record of change in rocks. Participants earn four graduate-level credits for the course. The cost of the course for teachers is reduced to $800 through generous funding received from the Michigan Space Grant Consortium.
