Information for Hosting Institutions

Requesting a Speaker

First, complete our on-line form to request a speaker for an event at your institution. You have the option of requesting funding to support the speaker's visit. If this request is approved, NAGT will pay for travel expenses and the speaker's honorarium ($250).

Departments/institutions who receive funding agree to the following:
  1. Before the visit, the host institution will make arrangements to invite neighboring schools to the speaker's presentation(s).
  2. The Host institution will cover the speaker's local food, accommodation and travel costs, the costs to photocopy workshop materials, and the cost of a substitute, if the speaker is a high school teacher.
  3. Following the visit, the host institution will submit an evaluation of the visit.
  4. The host institution will submit a report to the Speaker Coordinator six months after the visit to report on changes stimulated by the speaker's visit.

Applications are approved on a first come first served basis as long as the institutions meet the Funding Eligibility Criteria and the requested speaker is available. Only one request for funding per institution per year is approved. Institutions can request multiple speakers per year at their own expense.

Arranging the Visit

After a request has been submitted the Speaker Coordinator will send an email notification to the preferred speaker. This notification will include the host institutions goals and scheduling preferences. During this stage we ask that the host institution refrain from contacting the speaker.

Approximately 2-3 weeks after receiving your request the Speaker Coordinator will notify you of the status of your request. If the speaker is available, you will then be responsible for contacting the speaker and planning the visit. Please inform the Speaker Coordinator of the dates for the visit after the schedule if finalized.

Note that NAGT Distinguished Speakers are prepared to interact with your department in a wide variety of ways including seminar presentations, workshops, and one-on-one visits with your faculty. We hope that you will take maximum advantage of the time that your speaker spends on campus and arrange a full schedule that capitalizes on your shared interests. We also encourage you to consider ways in which the speaker's visit can impact other geoscience educators in your area. To assist in advertising this event you may use our speaker announcement template. (PowerPoint 580kB Jan25 10) Feel free to customize the design and details to suit your needs.

During the Visit

Please encourage participants to join NAGT. The Distinguished Speaker's Series is made possible in part by NAGT membership dues. The larger our membership the more activities we can sponsor. We hope that you will encourage faculty and students to join NAGT. To assist in spreading the word about NAGT we will send 20 copies of our NAGT membership brochure. (Acrobat (PDF) 164kB Oct25 11) Please let us know if you would like any additional information about NAGT or additional copies of the brochure.

Following the Visit

NAGT invests heavily in the Distinguished Speaker's Series and it is important to us to know how the visits are working. Therefore we ask that you please complete the on-line evaluation form shortly after the visit.

As a follow-up, NAGT asks that the host institution submit a report to Speaker Coordinator six months after the visit. The report should mention changes stimulated by the speaker's visit. This report can be submitted on-line.
