In 2000, Kelley, Karson, and Früh-Green participated on a cruise to the Atlantis massif, which was lead by Donna Blackman, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. On December 4th 2000, while operating the remote camera system called Argo they came upon “a landscape unlike anything that had been observed before”.
