This article in the Journal of Geoscience Education describes the use of concept sketches, simplified sketches annotated with processes, concepts, and interrelationships, to promote active student learning. Research indicates that concept sketches promote better student comprehension of the system under study and permit students to better use this knowledge to investigate the underlying processes and principles.
