Montana Geographic Information Clearinghouse

Montana State Library

This clearinghouse is provided by the Montana Natural Resource Information System (NRIS) in order to provide access to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and datasets for the State of Montana. Users can download GIS data on state and federal framework layers, aerial photos, topographic maps, soils data, and many other themes. These layers can also be chosen in 'bundles' (multiple layers) and clipped to a geographic area or buffer. There is a set of downloadable maps of statewide themes (Indian reservations, census data, etc.) that is searchable by county, quadrangle, watershed, or by using the 'map picker', a series of interactive viewers. Online applications include the Montana Digital Atlas, which constructs maps and reports about individual data sets for user-specified areas, the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) Topofinder I and II, which allows users to browse USGS topographic maps and aerial photos or zoom to any named place, coordinate, or USGS map; and many others. The site also features a request service for users to make and track specific requests for maps, data and other information.
