Summary

Click to watch the webinar screencast (MP4 Video 878.3MB Apr28 17).
This 60-minute webinar will showcase the web pages and resources that have been designed collaboratively by SERC and MathWorks to help you explore how teaching computation in the sciences with MATLAB can enhance the student learning environment in undergraduate science and related courses. The webinar will explore common challenges of teaching computational skills, focusing on teaching data visualization and data analysis, and showcase examples of biology, neuroscience, and geophysics teaching activities that overcome these challenges by utilizing MATLAB as a tool. Lisa Kempler from MathWorks will introduce the web pages and resources available for teaching with MATLAB. Alain Plattner from California State University–Fresno will showcase the teaching activity, Choice of geophone layout in a simple near-surface seismics setting; Benjamin Bratton from Princeton University will showcase the teaching activity, Building Modular Tools for Visualizing Computation; and Daniel Zysman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology will showcase the teaching activity, Principal Component Analysis.

Goals:

At the end of this webinar, participants will have...

  • Access to resources about teaching computation, using MATLAB as a tool
  • Examples of teaching activities that address some common challenges of teaching computational skills
  • Strategies for teaching visualization, data processing, and analysis of scientific data
  • An opportunity to join a growing community of peer educators
