Learning in the Field: Synthesis of research on thinking and learning in the geosciences
David W. Mogk and Charles Goodwin 2012 in Kastens, K.A. and Manduca, C.A., eds., Earth and Mind II: A Synthesis of Research on Thinking and Learning in the Geosciences: Geological Society of America Special Paper 486 p.131-163

This paper begins by addressing practical wisdom that has been drawn from anecdotal reports of learning in the field contributed by geoscience faculty. It then outlines the following attributes of learning in the field (1) embodiment (2) creation and use of inscriptions, and (3) initiation into the community of practice. These attributes are described by drawing on the theory and practice of the cognitive, learning, and social sciences. These insights on how people learn in the field have important implications for what and how we teach in the geoscience curriculum, and they provide a framework to guide future research.
