Wyoming Craton References

This is a collection of references compiled by David Mogk and Darrell Henry, with contributions from the 2019 EarthScope Synthesis Workshop: Life and Death of a Craton: A 4D EarthScope Perspective on the Role of the Wyoming Craton in the Evolution of North America. Many of the references are a direct product of the EarthScope program. Other references provide a historical perspective of the many contributions made from geological, geochemical, geochronological, and geophysical investigations of cratons in general and the Wyoming Craton specifically. This is a growing, community-based reference collection, so feel free to send additional references to be posted to mogkATmontana.edu or by using the Contribute a Reference form.

Purpose of this Reference Collection

For researchers (including students starting a new thesis project):

  • Please use this collection as a place to start for your new research project in the Wyoming Craton. You will find some of the foundational literature that has shaped our understanding of the Wyoming Craton over the past number of decades. You will also find some of the most exciting new science to emerge, particulalrly as a result of the EarthScope project. Many of the "big questions" are necessarily interdisciplinary, and you will find opportunities to integrate results from across many geoscience disciplines.

For teaching faculty, we encourage you to:

Teaching Strategies for Teaching with the Primary Literature

Many of us use the primary literature in our courses. However, students (particularly undergraduates) need some guidance in learning how to mine the information in professional scientific writings. Here are a few examples of different approaches one can take in teaching students how to read journal articles. (These teaching strategies derive from the On the Cutting Edge program Teaching Petrology in the 21st Century module, Teaching Strategies Using the Primary Literature).
